Ultimate “Can’t Go Wrong” Guide to Las Galeras, Dominican Republic
Why Visit Las Galeras & Samaná?
The Samaná Peninsula is one of the Dominican Republic’s most breathtaking regions. Far from the mega-resorts, it offers amazing nature (waterfalls, rainforests, national parks), gorgeous beaches (like Playa Rincón and Playa Frontón), friendly people and slow island living. It’s also a paradise for outdoor adventures (snorkeling, diving, hiking, horseback riding), and from January to March, you can enjoy whale watching.
After several years living here, I’m sharing in this complete travel guide a careful selection of trusted places — addresses that, through their consistency and genuine hospitality, have earned the trust of locals, expats, travelers, and (hardest of all) mine.
How to Get to Samaná & Las Galeras, and How to Move Around
-
Where To Land?
I recommend flying into Las Americas Airport in Santo Domingo.
The closest airport is El Catey, near Las Terrenas, approximately 80km from Las Galeras. It has not a lot of connections but it can be interesting if you are flying from certain nearby countries like Canada.
-
Renting a Car
Renting a car is a great option if you want flexibility to explore the region at your own pace.
I recommend renting directly at the airport and choosing a big international company.
Make sure that insurance is included.
-
Santo Domingo to Las Galeras By Car
Driving from Santo Domingo to Las Galeras usually takes about 3.5 hours.
You can take the Autopista del Nordeste (Highway 7), a modern toll road that leads to the Samaná Peninsula. There are several toll booths along the way (tolls are free for motorbikes). Once you leave the highway, you’ll head toward Santa Bárbara de Samaná and continue east along the coast until you arrive in Las Galeras. The last part of the drive is on smaller, scenic roads winding through villages and lush countryside.
It's important to take it slow and stay cautious. Expect a few potholes, animals and creative driving styles. Having some Mario Kart experience definitely helps!
-
Private Taxi from Santo Domingo Airport to Las Galeras
While prices may vary, guests at Villa Caribana in Las Galeras pay 9,000 DOP (as of April 2025) for a private taxi with Martin from Santo Domingo Las Américas Airport. The journey usually takes around 3 hours.
I recommend Taxi Martin. Tell him Thomas sent you.

Bus from Santo Domingo to Samana
It is the most economical solution. The best option is to go through a large company like Caribe Tours. You can consult itineraries on their website.
The Caribe Tours bus will take you from Santo Domingo to Samaná for 500 DOP per person and the journey takes around 2h30. You can then take a guagua from Samaná to Las Galeras for 150 DOP per person.
Asotrapusa, another bus company, offers the possibility to go from Santo Domingo all the way to Las Galeras.
-
Bus from Santo Domingo to Las Galeras
Asotrapusa (Asociación De Trabajadores Del Transporte Público De Samaná) offers the possibility to do from Santo Domingo all the way to Las Galeras.
-
Guagua from Samaná to Las Galeras
A guagua from Samaná to Las Galeras costs 150 DOP per person.
-
Moto Taxi (Motoconchos)
Motoconchos are a convenient and affordable way to get around in the Dominican Republic. You’ll easily find motoconchos available almost everywhere.
I highly recommend using official moto taxis. They are easy to recognize: they usually ride traditional motorbikes, wear a bright green vest, and carry a personal and official badge.

Whale Watching in Samaná Bay with Kim Beddall
The waters in the Samana peninsula are a prime location for whale watching as they migrate to the Samana Bay for breeding and calving. Whales start coming in December but, for the respect of the animal, the official period for observing them runs from January, 15th to March ,15th. For a memorable and respectful whale-watching experience, we highly recommend Kim Beddall from Whale Samana. Kim has been known for decades for her extensive knowledge (Mrs Whale) and passion for marine life. Her tours provide not only great chances to see these majestic creatures up close but also a respectful approach to wildlife observation.

Practical Travel Tips
-
Best Time to Visit Samana / Las Galeras
If you want to see whales, plan your trip between January and March, when they migrate to the bay.
The high season runs from December to April, with more visitors and a livelier atmosphere. This period also matches the dry season, with less rain overall. From May to November is technically the wet season, but don’t let that scare you. The Dominican Republic enjoys warm, sunny weather almost all year round. Sometimes weather forecasts will predict rain every day — and sometimes it does — but usually only for a few minutes. Here, nature isn’t lush because we water it every night, but because there is a good balance between rain and sun.
It's best not overthink it. There's plenty of sunshine year-round, with amazing weather most of the time!
-
Internet and 4G Connectivity
For those looking to stay connected to more than just nature during their stay in the Dominican Republic, 4G mobile data is available through two major operators: Claro and Altice. Both networks offer good coverage and reliable service, though depending on your location, one may work better than the other (Claro works better in Los Tocones for example).
A local SIM card costs only 100 DOP. You can purchase one at various shops. After getting your SIM card, you’ll need to add credit to your account. You can do this by visiting a “banca” and providing your phone number. The process is quick. Some colmados also offer this service.
-
Money & ATMs
There are two ATMs in Las Galeras: one at Banreservas and one at Comercial De León. Both charge extra fees on top of what your own bank might charge, and withdrawal limits may be lower than expected.
A cheaper and more flexible option is to withdraw money inside the bank. You will need to present a cédula or a passport.
However, note that Banreservas only accepts credit cards for withdrawals inside the bank (debit cards can only be used at the ATM).
In Samaná, you can withdraw money inside Banco Popular. This bank accepts both credit and debit cards for withdrawals inside the bank. Make sure your full name is fully visible on the card. If your name is long, it could cause issues.
